Heather is a guitarist, composer, and music teacher – highly active in the New Zealand jazz and musical theatre scenes with performance experience as a recording artist, bandleader, and sideman. She has broad musical interests and plays a variety of guitars including electric, acoustic, banjo, and mandolin. She was a foundation member of the All Girl Big Band and enjoys leading her own groups, Heavy Water Quartet, The Stick! and the Blues Berries, as well as performing as a member of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, The Court Theatre, Showbiz, and The Free Theatre.
She has been tutored by world-renowned musicians Gilad Hekselman (ISR), Jesse van Ruller (NDL), Dick Oatts, John Riley (USA), Bob Heinz, Andy Genge (NZ), and Dixon Nacey (NZ). A recent career highlight was attending the Conservatorium van Amsterdam 2017 Summer Course and performing at the Amsterdam Blue Note. Closer to home, she is a proud ensemble member in a variety of bands and has performed at multiple New Zealand Jazz Festivals and Arts Festivals.
Her passion for composition has taken off since her 2017 commission to write and record a new work with Sumo Jazz for their album, Shiko. This album advanced her skills as a composer and performer, and was released on Rattle Records with a launch concert at the 2018 NZ International Jazz and Blues Festival. She was thrilled to have her song ‘Replay’ feature in the Radio New Zealand 2018 Best of NZ Jazz list.
